Oral cancers are part of a group of cancers commonly referred to as head and neck cancers. Mouth cancer can occur on the lips, gums, tongue, roof of the mouth, the floor of the mouth, the inside of the cheeks, hard and soft palate, sinuses, the larynx, and the pharynx.
According to the American Cancer Society, men face twice the risk of developing oral cancer as women, and men who are over age 50 face the greatest risk. It's estimated that over 50,000 people in the United States received a diagnosis of oral cancer in 2019 and that over 54,000 will get a diagnosis of oral or oropharyngeal cancer in 2021.
