Ear Infection Relief
in the Stamford, CT; Greenwich, CT; & Westchester, NY Area

Ear infections are common and when we have them they can be quite painful. Inflammation and fluid buildup occurs causing the Eustachian tubes in the middle ear to swell. Ear infections are commonly caused from viral infection or bacterial infections such as a cold, flu or allergies.

In children, ear infection signs and symptoms can include loss of balance, ear pain, difficulty sleeping, tugging or pulling at the ear, crying and/or acting more irritable than usual, headache, loss of appetite, fluid drainage from the ear and a fever of 100 F or higher.

In adults, common signs and symptoms include fluid drainage from the ear, diminished hearing, fever, pus drainage, inner ear itching, ear redness and ear pain.

Depending on the cause of the ear infection, an appropriate course of treatment will be determined. If an individual has an ear infection from a virus, then antibiotics would not be prescribed to treat the infection. Types of Ear Infections We Treat

Ear infections can be chronic or acute. Acute ear infections are painful but short in duration while chronic ear infections either do not clear up, or recur many times. They can also cause permanent damage to the middle and inner ear. There are several types of ear infections that one can develop. Here are a few of the most common ones we see and treat:

Otitis Media: This is the most common type of ear infection, and it is most often seen in infants and children. Otitis media is an infection of the middle ear, which can be either acute or chronic. It causes the middle ear to become inflamed resulting in the pain and redness around the eardrum.

Otitis Media with Effusion: In this type of ear infection, fluid buildup and swelling in the middle ear is seen. Symptoms usually involve hearing loss but typically do not involve pain or fever. Otitis media with effusion can be caused by cold, respiratory infections, Eustachian tube malformation or adenoids inflammation.

Otitis Externa: Otitis externa is a condition that causes redness and swelling of the external ear canal. It is commonly referred to as "swimmer's ear" and can be caused by bacterial infection, fungal infections, and allergies.
